Dealing With Autism

(This photo story was done for a class May, 2007)
Tim and Deidre Miles knew there was something different with their son, Will, when he was 1 year old. He constantly turned items over with wheels and started spinning then. Deidre searched for spinning and autism on the Internet and many of the identical characteristics appeared. Since then, the Miles have been working on Will's communication skills though therapy and taking him swimming and therapeutic horseback riding. Now, that Will's 2.5 years old, the doctor confirmed that he's on the spectrum of autism, but that doesn't change the outpouring love from his parents.

Will's grandmother, Janet Miles, tries to get a hug while his father, Tim, takes in the moment on Easter Sunday, April 8, 2007. Refusing to kiss, cuddle, or give hugs are just a few of the any characteristics of autistic children.

Will has always been attracted to toys with wheels and watch them spin, which is how his parents first suspected he may have autism. Many of his toys includes Thomas the Train.

According to Deidre, Will is always irritated. She said, "Around 10 months to 1 year old, when he should've started trying to point and wave and try to communicate more, we started seeing tantrums and they got worse and worse." Here, he's diving into Deidre's arms during speech therapy April 3, 2007.

Deidre and Will have been going to Wilsons swimming pool during family time on Friday afternoon's since Feb., 2007. Even though they swim for the great strengthening exercise, Will was amused with the lane dividers, while spinning and counting them.

Will attended the Spring 2007 session at Cedar Creek Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center in Columbia. When Will started, he was hesitant on wearing the helmet. By the fourth session, he was excited to ride and didn't notice the helmet. Assisting Will ride "Ally" is Marilyn Jones, Katie Koelling, and Aubrey Richardson.

Both Tim and Deidre attend every session at the Cedar Creek Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center and enjoy watching their son ride a horse. After the first session, Tim said it was magical to see his son calmly sitting still on a horse.

To receive an accurate evaluation of Will's level of autism, he must visit the doctor when he's at least 2.5 years old, no earlier. Therefore, six months in advance, the Miles set up an appointment at the Thompson Center for April 23, 2007, three days after Will turned 2.5.

Even though Tim and Deidre knew the diagnosis Will may receive, it was hard to hear the news from Dr. Maureen O'Kane Grissom that Will is indeed on the spectrum of autism. Now, the Miles are curious what's in hand for Will's future.

Many evenings, Deidre and Will play a Dora the Explorer game on the Miles computer. This enhances Will's learning of shapes and colors. They don't do this every night because Will can become extremely rigid if the schedule doesn't change.

Deidre sings bedtime songs to Will while Tim prepares to turn off the light before going to bed. Regardless how severe Will's autism is, nothing will change their love for their only child.
